Producer Capacity Building

For most multinational aquaculture companies, compliance with the Aquaculture Dialogue standards will demand further capacity building and investments into (e.g.) management practices and waste water management. They will be able to do those investments and be compliant with the Aquaculture Dialogue standards.

For smallholders in Vietnam, Thailand and other countries those investments will be impossible to make. That is why the ASC is investing in capacity building for smallholders to work towards compliance with the Aquaculture Dialogue standards.

This capacity building programme includes support for smallholders in organisation and administration issues, training in best management practices, support in finding financial support for investments in more responsible management practices. Basis of the capacity building programme are several studies on inclusion of smallholders. Next to that the ASC will also advise and help building producer capacity of larger fish farms.

Jan Gilhuis, ASC Capacity Building Programme: ‘The sustainability of aquaculture is not only measured by environmental issues. The aim of the ASC is to address social issues as well. One of them being the inclusion of smallholders in third world countries. Their market access through the ASC label will give them business opportunities and will raise their livelihood.'
